Magic Mill MFD-6100 Review
When searching for a new dehydrator, it can often be difficult to choose which one will truly enliven your kitchen the best. There are so many options out there. So many excellent manufacturers providing us all with remarkable dehydrators to dry out our food and fill in our lives, it’s hard to know even where to start. That’s why you’ve come to this site and that’s why we’ve dedicated our lives to digging deep into the world of dehydrators and discovering which ones deserve a space in your kitchen to make food for your family.
Today, we’ll take a look at the Magic Mill MFD-6100. An advanced food dehydrator with an incredible range of functionality, it features 6 trays for bulk dehydrating that will ensure you get the most bang for your buck. It also includes 2 silicone mitts for the oven, which serve as an important safety precaution. Boasting of enhanced horizontal airflow, it allows for superior dehydration of some difficult-to-dehydrate foods (including banana chips) which often require a more delicate dehydration approach. So, this is certainly a machine worth considering for you and your family. Why? Keep reading to find out!
Pros
- Each one of the featured trays can hold 1 pound of food. That means that you can dehydrate up to 6 pounds of food at once in this unit—an impressive feat
- The machine also includes a digital thermostat and timer to make the dehydration process a little easier to control
- The transparent door cover makes it easier to monitor the drying process. Thanks to the transparent window, you’ll be able to check in on your food while it’s dehydrating
Cons
- As a result of plastic components, this unit emits a strong plastic smell. However, a thorough cleaning of the trays and running your unit while empty for a few hours effectively rids this unit of that smell. So while this obviously isn’t ideal, at least it is avoidable
- The fan can be quite loud, so you won’t want to start a fresh round of dehydrating and then have an important conversation or a Zoom call next to the machine
The Magic Mill MFD-6100 is quite a large appliance, so you will need ample counter space to accommodate this machine (or at least enough storage space to keep it between dehydration sessions). The unit comes with 6 see-through trays that are each capable of holding up to 1 pound of food. While some dehydrators may hold more than 6 trays, few can accommodate this sheer volume of food. So your family will certainly be well stocked with dried snacks, thanks to this beauty.
Since the extracted juices will never leave the respective trays, you will not have to worry about the different foods mixing. Yes, your meat won’t taste or smell like tomatoes. This can be a problem when racks are used instead of trays, so it is an important design choice that should not be overlooked.
Set at the back of the Magic Mill 6-Tray Food Dehydrator (accessible only after removal of all the trays) is a large fan that distributes hot air evenly throughout the trays. Unfortunately, it can also be slightly noisy. Air is pushed forward from the back of the unit through all of the six trays by this fan, emanating from the unit through the top. This precise flow of air allows all plates to enjoy an even heating, which is quite important. The door to the trays is also clear so you can see your food at all times.
Since the Magic Mill 6-Tray Food Dehydrator is digitally controlled, it offers a digital temperature controller and timer. The temperature ranges from 95°-158°F, ideal for the dehydration of all types of foods. You name it and this machine can dehydrate it. Oranges, fish, and even game meat. The Magic Mill does it all! Since it’s integrated with a digital timer, users will rarely (and even then, only accidentally) forget food like banana chips on the trays for days. If you’ve ever had to scrap burt and mouldy banana chips off of a dehydrator sheet before, you’ll know how important this is.
Simply setting both the temperature and timer allow users to relax without the necessity of constantly checking the food dehydrator to ensure that you turn it off at the right time. The Magic Mill is also available at relatively affordable prices and it is arguably one of the most advanced food dehydrators currently available on the market.
This food dehydrator has a powerful capacity of 400 watts and an electronic display control panel with the On and Off button in the middle, temperature control on the right, and timer on the left. This enables access to the operational times and temperatures for easy monitoring. The MFD-6100 is presently available in the color black and features stainless steel trays, as opposed to the solid plastic trays used by most other dehydrators. These trays might be different from what you are used to, but they are just as efficient.
Thanks to the transparent cover, users will not have to interrupt the food dehydration process and can also keep track of the progress. This unit weighs a total of 14.7 pounds, with dimensions measuring 17 inches in width, 19 inches in depth, and 12 inches in height—adequate space for the dehydration of different types of foods. It also has a total capacity of 6 pounds.
As you can see, this is certainly an excellent option for considering sprucing up their kitchen with a food dehydrator. Sure, the machine itself is a little large and loud, but you’ll find that these cons are well overpowered by the pros. In fact, given the remarkably affordable price, the Magic Mill 6-Tray Food Dehydrator should be at the top of the list for any family considering purchasing their first dehydrator. While there might be more advanced and compact dehydrators on the market, they are often quite complex and difficult to use for dehydration virgins. Instead, this is a strong machine to get you and your family started on your dehydration adventure. So what are you waiting for?! Click the button below and soon you’ll be pumping out batches of delicious and nutritious dried snacks that will please every member of your family.

I love, love, love my Magic Mill! I never thought that using a kitchen appliance could be fun, but that is exactly how I would describe using this machine. It has a good capacity, but it is not overly bulky. In fact, it takes up about the same amount of room as my average-sized microwave. I chose the black dehydrator with the stainless steel racks. It has a sleek, modern appearance, and it coordinates well with the rest of my kitchen appliances. This is important to me since I normally leave it out on the counter since I use it so much.
My husband and kids absolutely love my homemade beef jerky, and I make them a huge batch to take on their weekend camping trips. The dehydrator handles this from start to finish in just about 5 hours.
We have a large garden, and I think we’ll make up the money from purchasing the Magic Mill in just one year thanks to the amount of food that we won’t be wasting. I’ve been dehydrating vegetables already for use during the winter months.
You might be surprised to find out how many fun things you can really do with this dehydrator. In adding to drying fruits, veggies, and meats, you can make your own croutons with leftover bread, create homemade fruit rollups for the kids, and even dehydrate marshmallows until they look just like the ones in the Lucky Charms box. The possibilities with this machine are really endless!
There are several reasons why I am very happy with my purchase. One of the best features of the Magic Mill dehydrator is the fact that its racks are made of stainless steel. All of the other models that I researched in this price range were made of plastic. I also love that the dehydrator came with everything that I needed to operate it effectively. I use the silicone pot holders constantly in my kitchen now.
Other positive features include:
-The ability to program up to 19 ½ hours
-The range of temperature differences
-The 6 liners with small holes that work well for dehydrating sprouted wheat
-The machine is very quiet—even quieter than my microwave
As you can tell, I’m thrilled with my new dehydrator. I’ve used it to dry wheat to grind into my own flour, dry my own herbs, and dry fruit for a healthy and delicious snack. I love experimenting with it, and I have a lot of other things that I want to try in the future.
If I had to give one word that describes this product, it would be “disappointing.” My first issue with this dehydrator is the fact that it only reaches 140 degrees F instead of the promised 158 degrees F. This 18 degree difference might not seem like a lot, but it is very important when you are dehydrating beef. I make my own beef jerky, and dehydrating meat at 140 degrees bring a whole host of food safety problems. I checked on several thermometers to make sure, and they all gave me the same result.
As I’m typing this review, my Magic Mill dehydrator has already been returned, and I only received it last week. I’ll admit that it dries food efficiently and effectively, but I don’t believe that this machine is safe. As soon as I took it out of the box, I smelled a strong plastic smell. Unfortunately, the smell didn’t go away when I used it, and my food even had a plastic smell. Everything on this machine except for the trays is made of plastic that is not BPA-free, so I don’t feel comfortable using this in my home because of potential toxins.
